In 1987 during General Chamlong Srimuang 's term as Bangkok Governor, he found that the preventive measure against the spread of rabies by poisoning stray dogs and cats was not really efficient and also not appropriate according to buddhist precepts. He then initiated new measure that stray dogs and cats be caught, vaccinated and kept in animal shelter. The measure was so appropriate and efficient that not only helped reduce the number of stray dogs and cats but also prevent the spread of rabies in the long run.
Tung-see-kan Animal Shelter was the first animal shelter established to serve the measure. Located in Don Muang District, the shelter provided care for almost 2000 homeless and abandoned animals, which were not only dogs, cats, but also cows, buffaloes, goats, ducks, geese etc. The shelter survived for 10 years on the donations and support from various benefactors.
In 1997 the owner of the land, where the shelter was located, needed the land for other purposes. The shelter therefore needed to be relocated. Baan Pru Pradoo, 27 kms. from Kanchanaburi downtown, was selected to be the new location for the shelter.
Nowadays, the Animal Welfare Foundation financially supports the animal shelter where more than 2500 animals, mainly stray dogs and cats, are taken care of. The monthly expenses to run the shelter are quite high (about 400,000 - 500,000 bahts/month), which include not only the salaries for employees who take care of the animals, dog food, cat food but also for the medications, veterinarians and other
miscellanious supplies needed in the shelter. The foundation funds to support the shelter come from danations and fund raising programmes, which usually are annual charity golf tournament and charity rally driving.
Every life in the shelter gratefully thanks all benevolent donators and supporters for the kindness and generosity rendered to the shelter and is waiting to welcome all visitors at all times...
